SpaceX has unveiled an ambitious plan to invest up to $100 billion in a new spaceport in southern Louisiana. This massive project, dubbed Starbase Louisiana aims to become the world’s largest rocket launch facility, supporting thousands of Starship launches per year. The announcement comes as SpaceX seeks to expand its operations beyond its current facilities in Texas and Florida.
The new spaceport will be located in Vermilion Parish, covering approximately 125,000 acres in an area known as Pecan Island. This strategic location offers several advantages, including proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway for deep-water access and potential access to polar orbits which are crucial for SpaceX’s orbital data center satellites.
Key Features of Starbase Louisiana
Starbase Louisiana will feature five complexes, each with two Starship towers, totaling 10 launch pads across the facility. The site will also include propellant farms, vehicle processing facilities, and an airport. SpaceX President Gwynn Shotwell emphasized the site’s self-sustaining capabilities, including onsite propellant production and power generation.
The spaceport is designed to support SpaceX’s long-term goals, including making human life interplanetary and returning astronauts to the moon. The facility will play a crucial role in SpaceX’s efforts to dramatically increase the Starship flight rate, with the company aiming for more than 30 launches per day by 2030.
Environmental and Economic Impact
SpaceX has committed to preserving the natural beauty of the area, with plans to use only a small portion of the acreage and seeking to protect wetlands for wildlife and recreational activities. The company will partner with state and federal agencies to expand Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, focusing on shoreline protection, marsh restoration, and wildlife conservation.
The project is expected to create at least 3,000 local jobs with the potential for up to 10,000 jobs as the facility expands. The average wage for workers at the base is projected to be 192% more than the region’s current average salary, significantly boosting the local economy.
Future Missions and Innovations
Starbase Louisiana will be central to SpaceX’s plans for future missions, including launching the next-generation Starlink internet satellite constellation and building an orbital infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The facility will also support SpaceX’s lunar missions, with the Artemis IV mission planned for 2028, which will use a Starship lunar lander to return astronauts to the moon.
Construction on the new Starbase is expected to begin in 2027 with the first launch from the site targeted for 2029. This historic project will establish Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace, advancing SpaceX’s mission to make life multiplanetary.
