What is the 2024 electric vehicle charging bonus
The 2024 electric vehicle charging bonus is an experimental initiative active from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2025. This program allows electric vehicle owners to benefit from a charging power of about 6 kW during the night, Sunday and other holidays, without having to request an increase in power from their electricity supplier and without additional fixed costs
.
Introduced with resolution 541/2020/R/EEL, the bonus is managed by the Energy Services Manager (GSE) and the Regulatory Authority for Energy Networks and Environment (ARERA). The goal is to promote the “intelligent” charging of electric vehicles, exploiting the potential of electronic meters and advanced charging devices
.
Who is entitled to the bonus
The bonus is intended for customers with users connected to low voltage, who meet the following requirements:
- Active electricity supply contract for domestic or non-domestic customers.
- Committed power not less than 2 kW and not more than 4.5 kW.
- First or second generation remote controlled electronic meter compatible with the identification of energy withdrawals in the night/holiday time slots.
- Electric vehicle charging system electrically connected to the meter.
Beneficiaries must also consent to checks and controls at their home and promptly notify the GSE of any plant or contractual changes during the period of joining the trial.
How does the bonus work
The ARERA Electric Charging Bonus aims to facilitate the charging of electric vehicles in places not accessible to the public, ensuring economic and safety conditions for the electrical system. Participation is voluntary and requires interested end customers to submit a request to join the distribution companies
.
Once the request has been received, the distribution companies can implement temporary changes to the operating criteria of the electronic meters installed at the collection points.
How to apply for the 2024 electric vehicle charging bonus
Customers who meet the requirements can apply on the GSE website until December 31, 2025, through the reserved area, accessible with SPID. The request must contain personal information and documentation to verify admission requirements
.
Here are the main steps:
- The customer submits the application through the GSE website.
- The GSE verifies the completeness of the forms within 7 working days and notifies the distribution company of the request.
- The distributing company confirms the possibility of applying the bonus within 10 working days.
- The GSE communicates the outcome to the customer:
- If successful, the bonus is applied from the first day of the following month.
- In the event of a negative outcome, the customer can correct or supplement the request.
Allowed charging devices
To access the bonus, the charging device must be able to:
- Measure and record the electric vehicle’s active charging power.
- Receive and implement commands to reduce, increase or restore the maximum charging power.
The GSE provides a list of charging devices that meet these requirements.
