Webuild launches a 1.7 billion sustainable mobility project in Australia

A significant investment in the future of transportation

Webuild, a leader in the infrastructure sector, recently announced a major sustainable mobility project in Australia, signing a contract worth 1.7 billion Australian dollars, equivalent to about 1 billion euros. This contract concerns the design and construction of the “Tunnels North” lot of the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East, an initiative intended to revolutionize public transport in Melbourne. With the population growth expected in the coming years, this project aims to improve transport efficiency for more than 80% of citizens.

Project details and expected impacts

The Suburban Rail Loop is an ambitious project that aims to reduce the number of car trips, eliminating more than 600 thousand trips per day. The “Terra Verde” joint venture, led by Webuild with a 33.5% stake, also includes international partners such as GS E&C and Bouygues Construction Australia. This consortium was selected as a preferred bidder last July, demonstrating confidence in Webuild’s ability to manage large scale projects

Technological innovation in tunnel excavation

The contract involves the excavation of two parallel tunnels, each about 10 kilometers long, between the future Box Hill and Glen Waverley stations. In addition, 39 secondary tunnels and functional structures will be built for two future stations. To facilitate this process, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) will be used, highly technological machines that allow efficient and precise mechanized excavation. This approach not only speeds up construction time, but also reduces the environmental impact of the
project.

A step towards a sustainable future

The Suburban Rail Loop project represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future for Melbourne. With the increase in population and the need for more efficient transportation systems, initiatives like this are critical to ensuring that cities can meet the challenges of urban growth. Webuild, through this project, not only contributes to improving mobility in the region, but also positions itself as a key player in the global sustainable infrastructure landscape
