The United Arab Emirates has announced a landmark investment of €40 billion in Germany, signaling a deepening of economic ties between the two nations. This substantial commitment comes as both countries navigate a complex geopolitical landscape and seek to bolster their industrial competitiveness.
The investment, unveiled during a state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Berlin, is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Germany’s industrial base and support long-term economic growth. The €40 billion is in addition to the €34 billion the UAE has already invested in Germany, underscoring the significance of this partnership.
The Scope of the Investment
The €40 billion investment will be directed towards a range of sectors, including artificial intelligenceenergy and defense. A notable portion, €10 billion, is earmarked for Bavaria, highlighting the region’s importance in this strategic collaboration.
The investment package includes plans for developing digital infrastructure such as new data centers with a capacity of approximately 1 gigawatt. This initiative is expected to enhance Germany’s technological capabilities and support its transition to a more digital economy. The UAE views this as a long-term strategic partnership built on over 50 years of cooperation and mutual interests.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During the state visit, Sheikh Mohamed and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of reliable partners in the face of regional and geopolitical volatility. They underscored their commitment to defending the international order and fostering cooperation across various domains, including security, defense, trade, and energy.
The visit also saw the signing of 29 agreements between UAE and German companies, exceeding a total value of €9.4 billion. These agreements cover a wide array of sectors and are expected to drive innovation and economic growth in both countries. Additionally, Germany agreed to grant additional traffic rights to UAE airline Emirates, allowing it to operate a regular service from Berlin to Dubai.
Geopolitical Implications
The investment comes at a time when Germany is looking to diversify its energy and defense partnerships and reduce its dependence on the U.S. and China. Chancellor Merz’s visit to the Gulf region in February 2026 highlighted Berlin’s interest in deepening ties with the Middle East.
The joint declaration issued by the leaders reiterated their positions on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, including a condemnation of Iran‘s attacks in the region and disruptions to trade in the Strait of Hormuz. This underscores the broader geopolitical context in which the investment is being made.
The UAE’s investment in Germany is part of a broader strategy to spread its financial influence across Europe. Similar commitments have been made to France, Italy, and Turkey, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a heavyweight in key industries and secure critical supply chains.
As the world grapples with economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, the UAE’s investment in Germany represents a significant step towards strengthening economic resilience and fostering innovation. This partnership is poised to shape the future of both nations and their global standing.
