The launch of the IT Wallet: the new digital wallet for Italians

What is the It Wallet and how does it work

The new Italian digital wallet, known as It Wallet, is finally available to a limited number of citizens. Starting October 23, only 50,000 users will be able to access this innovative application, which will then be extended to everyone from December 4. Integrated into the Io app, the It Wallet allows you to store personal documents such as a driver’s license, health card and European disability card directly on your smartphone. This represents a significant step towards the digitalization of public services and bureaucratic efficiency
.

An articulated qualification process

The release of the IT Wallet will take place in four phases, with the aim of ensuring a smooth integration of documents. Users can upload their documents by accessing the app through SPID or Electronic Identity Card. Once in the ‘wallet’ section, just click on ‘add to wallet’ and follow the instructions to use the smartphone’s camera. Initially, digitized documents will only be usable for offline interactions, but functionality is expected to expand in 2025, with the addition of an identity card

The future of the IT Wallet and integration with private services

The Undersecretary to the Prime Minister, Alessio Butti, has stated that the IT Wallet will not be limited to public documents. In the future, private individuals will also be able to develop digital portfolios, creating healthy competition in the sector. It is expected that the IT Wallet can integrate services such as access to the electronic health record, digital signature and payments. In addition, there is talk of including subscriptions to local public transport, making the It Wallet a versatile and useful tool for the daily lives of Italians
