Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced a monumental investment of $7.4 billion in a state-of-the-art AI data center campus in Hyderabad, India. This ambitious project, developed by TCS’s subsidiary HyperVault aims to establish one of the largest AI infrastructure sites in the country, spanning 264 acres and capable of supporting up to one gigawatt of power.

The campus is designed to cater to frontier AI companies and hyperscalers providing high-density, liquid-cooled compute infrastructure on a global scale. TCS emphasizes the project’s commitment to green energy and water-neutral design principles although specific details on these terms remain undefined in the official filings.

Hyderabad’s Strategic Advantage for AI Infrastructure

TCS CEO K Krithivasan highlighted Hyderabad’s strategic advantages, noting the city’s scale, talent, and ecosystem as key factors in attracting global customers. The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities, driving growth across various sectors, including power supply, cooling systems, networking, construction, and facility operations.

The data center will feature advanced cooling technologies, such as liquid and direct-to-chip cooling, high-density racks, and robust network infrastructure. Power will be sourced from renewable energy, ensuring reliable operations and minimizing environmental impact. The campus will be developed in multiple phases, with the pace of construction dependent on customer demand and technological advancements.

The Global Context of AI Infrastructure Investments

This investment follows a broader trend of significant capital inflows into Indian AI infrastructure. Last November, TPG invested $1 billion in TCS’s data center business, reflecting the growing interest in India’s AI capabilities. The project also aligns with TCS’s broader strategy to integrate advanced infrastructure with its technology expertise, as part of its Infrastructure-to-Intelligence initiative.

In contrast, Europe has been focusing on regulatory frameworks for data centers. Under a delegated regulation adopted in 2024, any data center in the EU with at least 500kW of installed IT power must report annually on water consumption, energy demand, waste heat recovery, and renewable energy share. This regulatory discipline, though not enforced with penalties, ensures transparency and accountability in data center operations.

Sustainability and Future Prospects

The Hyderabad campus is poised to become a benchmark for sustainable AI infrastructure. By incorporating renewable energy sources and water-neutral design practices, TCS aims to set a new standard for environmentally responsible data centers. The project’s success could pave the way for similar initiatives in other regions, further solidifying India’s position as a global leader in AI technology.
