Revitalizing Louisiana’s Natural Heritage: Woodside Energy’s Forest Restoration Initiative

Woodside Energy is spearheading a transformative $5 million initiative to revitalize Sam Houston Jones State Park in Louisiana, partnering with local experts and academic institutions.

Revitalizing Louisiana's Natural Heritage: Woodside Energy's Forest Restoration Initiative

In a landmark initiative for environmental conservation, Woodside Energy has pledged $5 million to restore the ecological balance of Sam Houston Jones State Park in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. This ambitious project, spanning six years, aims to rejuvenate over 800 acres of forest habitat, marking the largest corporate donation ever received by a Louisiana state park.

The collaboration brings together Woodside Energy the Louisiana Office of State ParksResource Environmental Solutions (RES) and McNeese State University (MSU) to tackle the park’s environmental challenges. This partnership leverages expertise in conservation, habitat restoration, and environmental research to ensure the long-term recovery of the park’s native ecosystems.

Restoring Southwest Louisiana’s Natural Legacy

The project focuses on restoring the park’s distinctive longleaf pine forestscypress-tupelo swamps and hardwood forests which were severely impacted by natural disasters. Over the course of the initiative, approximately 245,000 native trees will be planted, enhancing the park’s biodiversity and resilience.

Daniel Kalms Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer International at Woodside, highlighted the significance of the investment. ‘With more than 17 years of operations in Louisiana, Woodside is honored to participate in this collaborative public-private partnership, investing in the preservation of Louisiana’s valuable natural legacy,’ he stated. This initiative complements Woodside’s ongoing $17.5 billion investment in the Louisiana LNG Project in Calcasieu Parish.

Community and Academic Engagement

The restoration efforts extend beyond ecological improvements, fostering community engagement and academic research. McNeese State University will conduct research and monitoring to measure the project’s long-term ecological outcomes, providing valuable opportunities for student involvement and scientific study.

Dr. Kedrick Nicholas Interim President of MSU, emphasized the project’s educational benefits. ‘This project offers significant research opportunities for McNeese State University. The restoration not only enhances the Park’s value as a community asset but also establishes a living laboratory for university-led research and ongoing ecological stewardship,’ he commented.

Ecological Restoration and Future Goals

Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) a nationally acclaimed ecological restoration organization, is leading the design and implementation of the project. Activities include site preparation, extensive tree planting, eradication of invasive plant species, and prescribed burns vital for longleaf pine regeneration. These efforts aim to improve ecosystem resilience, reduce wildfire risk, and support native wildlife species.

Frank Cuccio General Manager, Gulf Coast for RES, expressed pride in the project. ‘Sam Houston Jones State Park is one of Southwest Louisiana’s most treasured natural and recreational resources, and RES is honored to help restore its forests and wetlands for future generations,’ he said. This project exemplifies the best of ecological restoration, bringing together public agencies, private investment, academic research, and local communities to create lasting environmental benefits.

The initiative also includes community engagement opportunities, volunteer activities, educational outreach, and interpretive resources designed to keep the public informed throughout the restoration process. A project story map, accessible via a QR code posted inside the park, provides detailed information about the restoration goals and progress.

With this historic investment, Woodside Energy and its partners are ensuring that Sam Houston Jones State Park remains a vibrant and resilient natural treasure for generations to come.
