Italy and motorization: a growing rate and challenges for electric vehicles

A growing engine rate

Italy is in a particular position on the European scene, with a motorization rate that continues to grow significantly. According to updated data from the Public Automobile Register (ACI), our country has reached an impressive 694 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, far exceeding the European average of 571 cars. This increase, which has been around 1.3% per year since 2018, is considerably higher than that of other large economies of the European Union, such as Germany, Spain
and France.

Cities and vehicle density

A more detailed analysis reveals that metropolitan capitals show increasing motorization rates, with cities such as Catania, Reggio Calabria and Cagliari exceeding the national average. In particular, Catania stands out with 815 cars per 1,000 inhabitants.
In addition, the density of vehicles per square kilometer is particularly high in large cities, with Naples registering a maximum of 7,523 vehicles per km², while Lucca marks the lowest with 1,647 vehicles.

The issue of sustainability

Despite the increase in the number of vehicles, the situation is not as positive from an environmental point of view. The Italian car fleet is still dominated by fossil-fuel vehicles, with an increase in the number of these vehicles per capita nationwide. Hybrid cars, while representing 6.9% of the total in the capital municipalities, are unable to compensate for the growth of traditional cars. Electric cars, unfortunately, represent only 0.6% of the vehicle fleet, with a distribution limited to a few cities such as Milan and Bologna
.

Future Perspectives and Challenges

The challenge for Italy is clear: while the motorization rate continues to grow, it is essential to accelerate the transition to more sustainable vehicles. The growth of hybrid cars is a positive sign, but greater efforts are needed to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. Public policies and incentives for buying electric cars could play a crucial role in this process. Only in this way can Italy reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to a more sustainable future
