How DBS blends philanthropy, payments and green SMEs

DBS leverages finance, technology and ESG tools to boost resilience, streamline digital payments and guide SMEs toward sustainable growth.

How DBS blends philanthropy, payments and green SMEs

In a world where rapid technological change, demographic shifts and evolving work patterns constantly reshape economies, banks are being called upon to do more than just manage money. DBS Group has positioned itself at the intersection of finance, social impact and digital innovation, rolling out three distinct yet interconnected initiatives across Asia.

Strategic philanthropy: moving from relief to resilience in India

At the helm of the DBS Foundation Managing Director Karen Ngui explains that the organisation’s mission has evolved from simple charity to a forward-looking model that builds social and financial resilience among vulnerable populations. Since its founding in 2014, the Foundation has expanded its reach to partner with businesses, community groups and government agencies, committing up to SGD 1 billion over a decade to amplify impact. In India, collaborations with The/Nudge Institute and Haqdarshak focus on economic inclusion for roughly 85,000 low-income households, helping them navigate government benefits and acquire essential financial and digital skills.

Ngui stresses that resilience means equipping people with both basic necessities and the capability to improve their livelihoods. Financial literacy—from budgeting to digital banking—paired with digital literacy enables communities to adapt to AI-driven disruptions and shifting employment trends. The Foundation measures success through indicators such as increased access to formal credit, higher participation in skill-building programmes and demonstrable improvements in household income stability.

DBS MAX and Juspay: a smarter, multi-gateway payment ecosystem

Responding to India’s exploding digital-payments market—where Unified Payments Interface (UPI) volumes have surged by more than 12,000 % in ten years—DBS Bank India has launched an upgraded version of its merchant-collection platform, DBS MAX. The new layer, powered by global payments-infrastructure specialist Juspay offers intelligent routing based on merchant-defined rules, real-time performance analytics and a consolidated dashboard that tracks success rates, refunds and reconciliation across multiple aggregators.

Divyesh Dalal, Managing Director of Global Transaction Services, notes that customers now expect frictionless checkout experiences, and businesses need a platform that can switch between payment gateways with minimal technical effort. By integrating Juspay’s orchestration capabilities, DBS MAX delivers gateway-agnostic card tokenisation giving merchants the flexibility to add or replace providers without re-coding. The result is reduced downtime, higher transaction success, and clearer insight for promotional planning.

ESG Ready Programme: scaling sustainability for SMEs in Singapore

Since April 2024, DBS, in partnership with Enterprise Singapore, has run an intensive 12-month ESG Ready Programme. The cohort, now comprising 50 small and medium-sized enterprises from sectors such as food & beverage, hospitality and manufacturing, has completed training, carbon footprint assessments and the development of actionable decarbonisation roadmaps.

Graduates like Freshening Industries and Amara Holdings have already implemented tangible measures—solar panels, fleet electrification and energy-efficient automation—projected to cut thousands of tonnes of CO₂ over the next decade. Participants also gain access to DBS’s green-financing packages and industry-recognised sustainability certifications, turning ambition into measurable outcomes. According to senior minister Low Yen Ling, the programme illustrates that “the question is no longer whether sustainability matters, but how to turn it into practical business action.”

Impact assessment and forward outlook

Collectively, these three strands illustrate a holistic approach: building human capital through financial education, enhancing digital infrastructure for merchants, and embedding environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices within the SME ecosystem. The Foundation’s emphasis on patient capital and long-term partnerships mirrors the technology-first philosophy behind DBS MAX, while the ESG Ready Programme shows how financial institutions can catalyse green transformation at the grassroots level.

Looking ahead, DBS aims to expand its resilience-focused philanthropy to more Indian states, broaden the multi-gateway solution to cover additional payment methods, and increase the number of ESG-ready companies to 100 by the end of 2026. By aligning profit motives with societal goals, the bank is positioning itself as a prototype for how financial firms can drive inclusive growth across emerging markets.
