Created in 2013, Zcash, formerly known as “Zerocoin,” was initially suggested as an experimental extension of privacy to Bitcoin using advanced mathematical techniques called “zero-knowledge proofs.” Due to the novelty and computational intensity of the Zerocoin protocol, however, Bitcoin core developers found implementation in the Bitcoin protocol impractical. Subsequently, with further improvements to the protocol leading to substantially more efficient zero-knowledge proofs, Johns Hopkins’ founding Zerocoin scientists in collaboration with researchers from MIT and Tel Aviv University created a new protocol called “Zerocash” (Zcash).
How does Zcash work?
*zk-SNARKS *– Zcash uses a form of zero-knowledge evidence known as “Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge”. Yes, a bit of a bite. Thankfully, it is often short-circuiting zk-SNARKS within the crypto community.
zk-SNARKS checks that the conditions for a valid transaction are met, without checking private or confidential information. They allow a user to prove that they have the correct money and authorization, without actually having to show them. Wax seals were used to let messengers know that the letters were authentic without having to actually open and check. zk-Snarks works the same way.
