TotalEnergies has completed the sale of its distributed solar assets in Europe, marking a strategic shift towards large-scale renewable energy projects.

TotalEnergies exits distributed solar market in Europe for utility-scale projects

In a significant strategic move, TotalEnergies has completed the divestment of its distributed solar assets across seven European countries. This decision underscores the company’s commitment to focusing on large-scale utility-scale solar and wind farms which offer greater economies of scale. The divested assets, totaling around 170 MW primarily consisted of rooftop installations in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Luxembourg.

The divested assets have been acquired by Amarenco and AMPYR Distributed Energy which will continue to operate these installations, ensuring uninterrupted supply to customers. This strategic shift allows TotalEnergies to concentrate on projects that align better with its business model, particularly those exceeding 3 MW in capacity.

TotalEnergies’ Renewable Energy Ambitions

TotalEnergies’ decision to exit the distributed solar market is part of a broader strategy to accelerate its renewable energy portfolio. Over the last twelve months, the company has installed 8 GW of gross renewable capacity, bringing its total to 35 GW by the end of March 2026. The company aims to maintain this annual pace through to 2030 targeting more than 75 GW of renewable capacity.

The company’s renewable energy portfolio is not limited to solar and wind projects. TotalEnergies is also investing in flexible assets such as combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and storage solutions. By the end of April 2026, TotalEnergies held nearly 36 GW of gross renewable power generation capacity and aims to achieve over 100 TWh of net electricity production by 2030.
