Rising fuel prices: a growing problem for Italians

The current environment of fuel prices

In 2025, the debate over rising fuel prices became increasingly heated in Italy. According to Codacons, the increases are significant, with gasoline exceeding 2 euros per liter in some stores. This increase has raised concerns among consumers and trade associations, who are asking for immediate intervention by the government and competent authorities
.

The Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (Mimit) has tried to minimize the situation, stating that prices are stable. However, the reports of UNC and Assoutenti indicate a different reality, with requests for in-depth investigations into the formation of gasoline and diesel prices
.

The causes of the increase in prices

Recent data analysis shows that the average price of gasoline in self mode is currently 1,802 euros per liter, while diesel stands at 1,706 euros. However, motorways show a worrying picture, with prices exceeding 2 euros per liter. The causes of these increases are mainly two: the increase in the prices of refined products and the higher costs for retailers linked to the obligation to mix biofuels
.

The Codacons warned that a full tank of fuel costs an average of more than 2 euros more than in December, a trend that could have direct repercussions on the retail prices of the goods transported. This is particularly worrying considering that 88% of goods in Italy travel by road.

The consequences for Italian families

Italian families are already facing rising living costs, and the further increase in fuel prices could aggravate the situation. Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumer Union, emphasized that in a single week prices increased by more than 1%, with a 50-liter tank that costs 1 euro and 3 cents more. This increase is in addition to an increase of almost 4 cents per liter since the beginning of the year.

In addition, Assoutenti requested the intervention of the Guarantor for price surveillance, to investigate possible anomalies in the fuel supply chain. Fuel taxation in Italy is among the highest in Europe, with 58.7% of the price of gasoline and 54.5% of diesel absorbed by VAT and excise duties. This scenario jeopardizes not only the purchasing power of families, but also the country’s economic stability.
