A strategic agreement for renewable energy
Prysmian, a global leader in the energy and telecommunications cables and systems sector, recently announced a framework agreement with Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE), the operator of the French electricity transmission network. This agreement involves the design, supply, installation and testing (EPCI) of submarine cable connections, a significant step towards the energy transition and sustainability in
France.
Details of the link projects
The submarine cable connections will serve to connect two important offshore wind farms: the Fos Project and the Narbonnaise Project.
These projects will not only cover the subsea parts, but will also include landing works, ensuring effective integration into the national electricity grid. The construction of these projects is scheduled between 2026 and 2027, with a planned start of operation for the period 2031-2032
.
Investments and energy capacity
The total potential value of EPCI contracts is estimated at around 700 million euros. Each project involves the installation of three 225 kV HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) export cables, equipped with XLPE insulation and synthetic armor. In total, about 640 km of cables will be built, including 400 terrestrial km produced in Gron, France, and 240 km underwater manufactured at Prysmian’s centers of excellence in Arco Felice, Italy, and in Pikkala, Finland
.
Impact on sustainability and innovation
These projects not only represent a significant investment in the renewable energy sector, but they also demonstrate Prysmian and RTE’s commitment to energy sustainability. The installation of the cables will be carried out using one of Prysmian’s state-of-the-art cable laying vessels, thus ensuring an efficient and technologically advanced operation. The Fos Project, located on the coast of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, will require about 300 km of cables, while the Narbonnaise Project, on the coast of Occitania, will need about 340 km, with a potential capacity of
750 MW for each project.
Conclusion
This agreement between Prysmian and RTE marks an important step towards a more sustainable energy future in France, helping to strengthen the electricity grid and promote the use of renewable energy. As demand for clean energy increases, initiatives like these are critical to ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply.
