Positive closing for European stock exchanges and signs of global growth

European stock exchanges closed the day with a positive sign, highlighting a climate of optimism among investors. At Piazza Affari, the Ftse Mib recorded an increase of 0.2%, reaching 36,200 points. Among the outstanding securities, Mediobanca stands out, which saw an increase of 7.7% after the announcement of a public exchange offer by MPS, which instead fell by 6.9%.

Sectors’ performance

In the context of this positive close, other stocks also showed significant performance. Campari increased by 5.4%, while Iveco and Moncler recorded an increase of 3.9% and 3% respectively. These results were supported by Burberry‘s higher-than-expected sales, which gave a boost to the luxury sector.
However, not all the news was positive: Saipem and Telecom Italia saw their stocks fall, by 2.9% and 1.8% respectively.

Macroeconomic indicators and future prospects

On
the macroeconomic front, data from the eurozone showed a return to growth, with SMEs reporting a recovery after two months of contraction. In the United States, consumer sentiment declined for the first time in six months, while sales of existing homes increased. Forecasts indicate price growth at an annual rate of 3.2% over the next five to ten years, a slight increase from the 3%
expected in December.

Focus on interest rates and commodities

In Japan, the Bank of Japan raised rates to 0.5%, while consumer prices accelerated to 3.6% per year. The inflation forecasts have been revised upwards, highlighting a changing economic environment. For next week, the focus will be on the meetings of the Fed and the ECB, in addition to macro data on the GDP of the United States and the eurozone.
On the bond market, the Btp-Bund spread remains stable at 108 basis points.

Commodity and cryptocurrency trends

As far as commodities are concerned, Brent oil stands at 78.3 dollars per barrel, heading towards the first weekly decline of the year. Gold, on the other hand, saw an increase, reaching 2,770 dollars an ounce. In the currency market, the euro rose above 1.05 against the dollar, while the dollar/yen stands at 155.7. Finally, among cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin has exceeded 106 thousand dollars, marking a moment of great interest in the sector
