Pensions in Italy: an in-depth analysis of the pension system in 2023

The pension landscape in Italy in 2023

In 2023, the Italian pension system showed signs of growth, with performance increasing by 0.6% compared to the previous year. According to data provided by the INPS, pension benefits reached a total of 22,919,888, with a total expenditure of 347,032 million euros, showing an increase of 7.7% compared to 2022. This scenario highlights the challenges and opportunities that the pension system faces, especially in a constantly changing economic environment
.

Distribution of pensions and beneficiaries

A significant aspect that emerged from the data is that 4,786,521 retirees, equal to 29.5% of the total, receive a pension of less than 1000 euros per month. Among these, 1,699,780 retirees receive a total allowance of less than 500 euros. This fact raises questions about the sustainability of the system and the need for reforms to guarantee a decent standard of living for Italian retirees
.

Gender disparity and territorial distribution

Another critical point concerns gender disparities in the pension system. Women represent 52% of retirees, but men receive 56% of pension income, with an average amount of 24,671 euros for men compared to 18,291 euros for women. In addition, the distribution of pensions is strongly influenced by geography: the northern regions host 47.4% of pensions, with higher average amounts than the rest of the country. This territorial imbalance highlights the need for targeted policies to address
regional inequalities.
