Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has outlined a comprehensive strategy to bolster the country’s economic framework through tax reforms enhanced FBR efficiency and the promotion of a cashless economy. These initiatives aim to foster transparency, restore taxpayer confidence, and lay the groundwork for sustainable economic development.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the FBR’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing the financial sector. He highlighted the critical role of technology and artificial intelligence in achieving these goals, stressing the need for continuous adaptation to global standards.

Strengthening the FBR: A New Model for Efficiency

The government is introducing a new model within the FBR designed to significantly improve the institution’s transparency and efficiency. Aurangzeb congratulated the officers who completed the training programme, urging them to leverage their newly acquired skills to drive positive change within the FBR. He expressed confidence that these officers would play a pivotal role in transforming the FBR into a modern, effective, and people-friendly institution.

Looking ahead to Pakistan’s centenary in 2047, Aurangzeb noted that the reforms initiated in 2026 would be remembered as a milestone in institutional transformation. He underscored the importance of present-day decisions in shaping the country’s future, calling for a sense of national responsibility among all relevant institutions and officers.

Promoting a Cashless Economy and Combating Tax Evasion

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is particularly focused on FBR reforms and the promotion of a cashless economy. Aurangzeb explained that these efforts are aimed at documenting the economy, expanding the tax net, and enhancing financial transparency. He argued that tax evasion hinders national development and that the government is taking effective steps to eliminate it.

The reform process began with the sugar sector, followed by monitoring and reform measures in the cement sector. The government has detected major cases of sales tax evasion, resulting in increased tax collections and benefiting the national exchequer. Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of developing modern databases to facilitate information exchange, prevent tax evasion, and improve policy-making.

Leveraging Technology for Effective Tax Administration

Aurangzeb stressed that modern digital systems and integrated data are essential for effective tax administration. He urged FBR officers to fully utilize modern technology, particularly artificial intelligence to align the institution’s performance with global standards. He highlighted the need for continuous updates to keep pace with changing technology.

The government’s reform measures have already begun yielding positive results. Aurangzeb thanked LUMS University and all partner institutions for their cooperation in developing a quality training programme that will enhance the human resource capacity of the FBR. He urged the newly trained officers to perform their duties with honesty, integrity, and a spirit of national service.

FBR Chairman Muhammad Rashid Langrial echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the professional skills of FBR officers to establish an effective tax system. He congratulated the officers who succeeded in the programme and encouraged those who did not to strive for success in the future. Langrial highlighted the FBR’s efforts to ensure that its officers possess the skills and abilities to benefit both the institution and the country.

As Pakistan continues to navigate its economic challenges, the initiatives outlined by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb represent a significant step towards a more transparent, efficient, and technologically advanced financial system.
