Introduction to IT Wallet
The marks an important date for Italian citizens: the official launch of IT Wallet, the digital wallet integrated into the IO app. This innovative functionality is now accessible to all adult citizens, representing a significant step towards the digitalization of public services and the simplification of daily
life.
A gradual and ambitious rollout
The IT Wallet rollout began with a select group of 50,000 users, expanded to 250,000 on November 6 and to one million by November 20.
The ultimate goal is to extend the use of this digital tool to the entire Italian population, estimated at about 44.5 million people, by 2025. This project aims to facilitate the transition from traditional credentials such as SPID and CIE, making it easier to access public services

IT Wallet functionality and security
IT Wallet allows users to have on their smartphone the main personal documents in digital format, such as the health card, driving license and European Disability Card. To upload documents, it is necessary to authenticate yourself through SPID or CIE, thus ensuring high security standards in the management of personal data. It is important to note that, for the time being, the digital versions of the documents do not replace the physical ones, which it is advisable to continue to carry with
you.
Future Perspectives and European Integration
By 2026, IT Wallet will be integrated into the European digital wallet (EUDI Wallet), allowing Italian citizens to use the service also in other member states of the European Union. This represents a fundamental step towards greater interoperability and a unique digital identity for all European citizens. However, it is essential that users are aware of current limitations, such as the fact that the digital license is not yet recognized by airport authorities
.
Investments and future development
The Italian government has planned a state investment of 102 million euros for each year of development, until the project is fully operational. The functionality of IT Wallet is set to expand further, including documents such as passports, birth certificates and electoral cards. This development will not only improve the efficiency of public services, but it will also help create a more secure and accessible digital ecosystem for everyone
