IDF Mourns Four Soldiers Killed in Hezbollah Drone Strike

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced a tragic loss on Friday, June 19, 2026. Four soldiers, including the commander of the 52nd Battalion, were killed in a Hezbollah drone strike in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred near the village of Kfartebnit, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

The fallen soldiers include Lieutenant-Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, a 32-year-old commander from Kibbutz Beit Hashita. Ben Simhon had taken command of the 52nd Battalion in April 2026, following the serious injury of his predecessor in combat. The names of the other three soldiers have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.

The Incident and IDF Response

The fatal incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. when a suspicious aerial target struck a tank operated by the 52nd Battalion troops. The military is investigating whether the strike was caused by a first-person-view (FPV) drone. The attack resulted in the deaths of Ben Simhon and three other soldiers.

In response to the attack, the IDF launched heavy overnight strikes in the Kfartebnit sector and other areas in southern Lebanon. The military reported striking about 100 Hezbollah targets, including command centers in the Bekaa Valley. The IDF stated that these strikes were in response to repeated violations of the ceasefire by Hezbollah.

Tributes and Condolences

Lieutenant-Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon was described as a courageous and determined leader. He came from a family of combat soldiers, with four of his brothers serving in the 401st Brigade and another in the Golani Brigade. His wife serves as a combat officer in the Combat Intelligence Collection and Border Defense Corps.

The Gilboa Regional Council, which includes Kibbutz Beit Hashita, expressed their grief and saluted Ben Simhon’s bravery. Defense Minister Israel Katz also reacted to the soldiers’ deaths, describing Ben Simhon as a dedicated commander who fulfilled senior roles in the northern sector. Opposition leader Yair Lapid and other political figures shared their condolences, mourning the loss of the brave soldiers.

The Broader Implications

The attack has broader diplomatic repercussions. Iran canceled a planned delegation trip to Switzerland for talks related to the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding, citing Israeli military operations in Lebanon as a violation of the agreement. The White House also announced that U.S. Vice President JD Vance had postponed his trip to Switzerland, where technical talks on implementing the agreement were expected to begin.

The IDF has not yet released additional details about the circumstances of the attack or the identities of the other three slain soldiers. The military said further information would be released as it becomes available.
