European car market: data and trends for October 2024

Car registrations in Europe

According to data published by the Association of European Manufacturers (ACEA), the car market in Western Europe showed a minimum increase in the month of October 2024, with 1,041,672 registered cars. This represents an increase of 0.1% compared to 1,040,532 registrations in the same month of the previous year. However, it is important to note that this figure is still 14.3% lower than in October 2019, a period before the economic crisis
.

Annual enrollment trend

In the period between January and October 2024, total registrations reached 10,821,299 units, a slight increase of 0.9% compared to the same period of 2023. However, the comparison with 2019 shows a significant drop of 18.8%, indicating that the car market has not yet returned to pre-crisis levels
.

Electric and hybrid cars: emerging trends

2024 is a year of transition for the European automotive market, characterized by a fluctuating trend. This is partly due to the attempt to recover the share of electric cars, which has undergone a downsizing due to the end of incentives in Germany, the main market in the area.
However, there is growing interest in plug-in hybrid cars (PHEV), which registered an increase in registrations of 18.2% in Germany compared to October 2023, reaching a share of 8.3%.

These data suggest that, despite the difficulties, the car market is trying to adapt and respond to new consumer needs, with an eye to sustainability and green technologies.
