Climate change: Italians’ main concern
Climate change is confirmed as the risk most feared by Italians, according to the eleventh edition of the Future Risks Report published by the Axa Group. This report, produced in collaboration with Ipsos, involved more than 3,000 risk experts and about 20,000 citizens in 15 countries. The research has highlighted a growing sense of vulnerability among the population, who feel increasingly exposed to environmental and social threats
.
Perceived vulnerability and the role of insurers
A significant fact that emerged from the survey is that 87% of experts believe that the world is more vulnerable to risks than in the past. In this context, the role of insurers is considered crucial: 91% of experts and 72% of the general population agree on the importance of the protection offered by insurance. This reflects a renewed confidence in the insurance sector as a tool for dealing with the uncertainties
of the future.
Emerging risks according to experts
Analyzing the results, it can be seen that, in addition to climate change, pollution occupies a significant position among Italians’ concerns. However, experts also highlight emerging risks such as those related to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, which are not perceived as priorities by the population. This disconnect between public and expert perception may indicate a lack of awareness regarding increasingly sophisticated and interconnected threats
.
A change in the perception of pandemics
Another interesting aspect of the report is the drop in the alert for pandemics and infectious diseases, which remains significant only in certain areas, such as Asia. In Italy, concern shifts to chronic diseases, reflecting a demographic and social evolution. This change in focus suggests that society is beginning to recognize the importance of dealing not only with immediate crises, but also with long-term challenges related to public health.
Conclusions and future prospects
The 2024 Future Risks Report provides a valuable overview of global and local risk perception. With a growing sense of vulnerability and an awareness of the need for a coordinated response, it is essential that institutions, companies and citizens collaborate to face future challenges. Prevention and preparation remain the keys to mitigating the impacts of emerging risks and ensuring a safer future
for everyone.
